Sri Lankan Sign Language Reference

(This project was funded by ICT Agency of Sri Lankan and World Bank and  hence the content is distributed free)

There are about 2000 words for which signs have been developed by National Institute of Education (NIE), Ministry  of Education, Sri Lanka. Our DVDs and the website contain the video signs of all the 2000 words. The program is designed in such a way when a word is selected, the following information will be displayed on the screen;

Video recorded sign of the word
Video recorded lip movement of the word with voice (in - Sinhalese or Tamil)
Static sign of the word
Picture that explains/ denotes the word
Word (text – in Sinhalese or Tamil)

Both the videos (sign and lip movement) are played using flash player and the user will be able to replay either of the videos by clicking the ‘Play’ button in the software.

Curriculum

The words are categorised based on following categories;

Nouns (click here for sub categories)

Verbs

Adjectives (click here for sub categories)

Figures (click here for sub categories)

Moreover, all the above categories will be divided in to chapters.

There are three ways that the user will be able to use the software;

1. Select the main category (Noun, Verb etc.). All the sub categories associated with the selected main category (Relations etc.) will appear on the screen. Select the relevant category where the required word in likely to be found. Once he/she selects the relevant sub category all the words under that particular category will be displayed in the screen. The user can select the required word and upon clicking the word, video, image, text and audio associated with the word will be played on the screen.

2. If the users wants to learn the words based on a sequence, then he/ she can go through Chapter 1, chapter 2 etc.

3. The user also can search for the word by entering the word in the search box. This will result on the specific word being displayed in the screen. Upon clicking the word, video, image, text and audio associated with the word will be played on the screen.
