Sri Lankan Sign Language Course (This project was funded by ICT Agency of Sri Lankan and World Bank and hence the content is distributed free) In Sri Lanka, dedicated national curriculum for teaching the children with hearing difficulties is available only for grade one students. From the 2nd year onwards, the schools are encouraged to use the standard books that are used to teach normal students. This is in line with the modern educational standards where the children of disabilities are integrated with the classes for students without disabilities. There is no curriculum designed for teaching at pre school level. As our objective is to teach all the available signs to the children, our software contain items that are taught at Pre School as well. Hence, the 1st chapter includes numbers, alphabets, colours & shapes and simple words associated with alphabets (such as 'A' for Apple etc.). The 2nd chapter will be based on the dedicated curriculum designed by NIE/ Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka for teaching deaf children in grade 1. The subsequent chapters will be based on the standard national curriculum followed for languages. This will enable the students to learn the signs pertaining to the words that are in the subjects. This will also have the added advantage of exposing the students to the subjects followed by normal students. The software contains the curriculum for grades 1 to 3 in Sinhala, Tamil & English subjects. The first part of each lesson focus on the teaching of the individual words and signs that occur in the lesson. This process is based on real time video clips and pictures where the instructor demonstrates the sign. After the demonstration of the sign of a word, pictures associated with that particular word are shown along with the static sign. Videos to explain a specific word are also used wherever appropriate. In addition, the static sign associated with the word and the picture denoting the relevant word are displayed. The second part contains the teaching of sentence forming using the words that were taught in the first part. This is in the form of narration of the story mentioned in the lesson. Here, video clips are used to demonstrate the specific story in sign language. The pictures depicting the story and written script of the story are displayed after a particular conversation.
